ABOUT US

A California native with an innate understanding of the West Coast’s shifting light, Taryn Carlson approaches architectural photography through the lens of a storyteller. Her work is built on a 25-year technical foundation in motion picture and television cinematography—a discipline where light, shape, and narrative are the primary tools of the craft.

Starting her career in the darkroom and later working as a cinematographer’s assistant, Taryn was mentored by masters of the lens who taught her to see light as a structural element. She has carried that obsession with mood and shadow into the world of interiors, where she doesn’t just document a room; she captures the rhythmic interplay of shadow and structure.

Her process is inherently collaborative. Taryn values the shared expertise of her colleagues at Engel Studios and the wider community of photographers and designers who consistently push the boundaries of the industry. Whether she is framing a coastal retreat or a mid-century estate, her focus remains on telling the clear, immersive story of the structures we inhabit.

With photography featured in premier global design publications including Dwell, Architectural Digest Italia, and Pricey Pads, Taryn remains committed to the art of the frame—capturing the intersection of architectural precision and modern soul.
